Genre and Audience pleasures
Rick Altman argues that genre offers audiences a set of pleasures:
Emotional Pleasures
- How does the text make you feel?- happy, sad, nostalgic etc.
Visual Pleasures
- Gut responses such as excitement, fear, laughter.
Intellectual Pleasures
- Does it make the audience think.
Non diegetic
-Intense, fast paced music builds tension. Links to the genre as Sci-fi is unpredictable and intense.
-Suddenly shifts to calmer, emotive music as soon as The Doctor mentions the female characters dad. This creates nostalgia and makes the audience feel emotional.
-Computer/electricity sounds effects (diegetic) also link to the sci-fi genre.
-Dialogue- Carries the story and gives information to the audience.
-The Birdy Song- used for comical effect, is nostalgic for target audience.
Mis-en-scene
Pick 3 different scenes and write notes about:
Scene 1 - Laboratory
Setting - The location of this scene is an a laboratory. This is very relevant to the genre as it is Sci-fi as it is a very scientific genre.
Props - There are lots of different computer monitors at the main desk. This can suggest that there is lots of information to do with Sci-Fi.
Costume -The doctor is given a suit to wear. This shows that he is a very important character. The suit can also suggest that he is a smart character. This can relate to the Sci-fi genre as it tends to be an educational genre.
Lighting - The lighting in the lab is blue which gives a very chilling atmosphere. This relates to the genre as in most Sci-Fi shows there are intense and chilling moments.
Scene 2 - House
Setting - This scene is set in a modern day house. This can relate to any genre.
Props - WHY have these props been used? How does it relate to the genre?
Costume - The doctor seems to be wearing a suit from the past. This relates to the genre as it seems that the doctor has time traveled.
Lighting - The lighting is slightly dark. This creates a spooky atmosphere which relates to Sci-Fi.
Scene 3 - Dark Street
Setting - This setting has been used to create suspense. It seems that there is a police car and this relates to Sci-Fi is it is intense.
Props - The police car has been added to create a sense of mystery. This relates to the Sci-Fi genre.
Costume - WHAT is the costume? How does it relate to the genre?
Lighting - There is a blue light from the car. Blue is a chilling colour and creates suspense. This links very well to the genre.
Camera Language
- Close up doctor and Kate. Creates tension.
- Tracking. Dr Kate and Amy walk past cubes.
- Low Angle. When the Doctor and Assistant walk into building.

Conote- What something you see suggests.
Class example
Point: The lighting used in the laboratory scene.
Example: At the computer, whilst the doctor is typing blue, artificial light is denoted. The light is very bright. The rest of the lighting is dark and black.
Explain: This connotes the sic-fi genre as chilling and mysterious. The blue creates a connotation of loneliness and vulnerability as the Cubes are attacking earth, leaving the human race helpless. The darkness heightens this sense of loneliness and fear, although the blue light could connote the doctor and his tardis as a ray of light.
Theory: This could link to a visceral pleasure of anxiety and fear, created in the audience, as it emphasizes the uncertainty of the Doctor and whether he can save the world.

Point: The Camera Language used in the house.
Example: The Doctor an Kate are speaking inside a modern house. There is a Close Up.
Explain: This connotes that what the pair are talking about is serious and so the audience must hear it. The Close Up creates a sense of tension leaving the audience the feel as if they are about to listen to the beginning of a surprising moment within the episode.
Theory: This could link to the to the feelings that are tense and fearful, in the audience. There is a sense of uncertainty to what they will see in the laboratory.

Moving forwards, try to also connote the genre and representational elements as well as the impact on the audience.
