Audiences

Image
Mainstream- Something aimed towards a mass market (the majority of people). Targeted to a broad range of interests. Mainstream also appeals to lots of different audiences. -X Factor is a mainstream show. -Drake is a mainstream artist. Niche- Aimed towards narrow demographic. - Spongebob is a niche market More things are being made so there is becoming more and more access. Shows that have been around for a long time which were niche are becoming more and more mainstream. Narrowcasting: Aiming programmes at specific and specialist audiences as opposed to broadcasting to 'mass' audiences. - Youtube is specifically  narrowcasted on the internet for users who want to watch any type of video. The Long Tail- i s that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. Different channels are e...

Web 2.0 and technological convergence

Technological convergence allows audiences to access media content from multiple platforms on one device. It involves the coming together of information and communication technologies to create  new ways of producing and distributing products and services to media audiences. A black box is a device that supplies us with all of our informational and media requirements (e.g. a smartphone). Web 1.0 is how the internet was originally. This is where the media only broadcasted a message. Web 2.0 is the interactive internet. E.g. Commenting on an Instagram post. A new episode of black mirror is going to have a chose your on fate. Fallout 76 is a video game that is eternally online. Web 2.0 allows you to meet new people you would normally never meet before. Web 3.0 Artificial intelligence The internet of things Almost everything is available to you wherever, whenever and for a price that is much cheaper. A months subscription to Spotify is cheaper than a CD was (£15). ...

Exam Question

- Multiple Close ups show emotion. - Long shot of whole audience. - Long shot showing whole family together. Analyse how camera is used to create meaning in a media product you have studied.  There are a large variety of Close Ups during this video. Most of the Close Ups come while the girl is singing. The Close Ups are on her, judges and people in the audience. The reason in using the Close Ups is so that the viewers of the video can see the emotions running through the girls face it also creates tension in the audience. It also shows how concentrated the audience and judges are on the performance as they are enjoying it very much. This links to a previous case study we have studied in Doctor Who. The Close Up is used on the doctor to show tension. A Long shot is used during the video. The Long Shot is used to show the whole family celebrating proudly after the performance of the girl. The Long Shot shows how thrilled each member of the family is with the girls performance...

Micro analysis and genre

Image
Genre and Audience pleasures Rick Altman argues that genre offers audiences a set of pleasures: Emotional Pleasures - How does the text make you feel?- happy, sad, nostalgic etc. Visual Pleasures - Gut responses such as excitement, fear, laughter. Intellectual Pleasures - Does it make the audience think. Non diegetic -Intense, fast paced music builds tension. Links to the genre as Sci-fi is unpredictable and intense. -Suddenly shifts to calmer, emotive music as soon as The Doctor mentions the female characters dad. This creates nostalgia and makes the audience feel emotional. -Computer/electricity sounds effects (diegetic) also link to the sci-fi genre. -Dialogue- Carries the story and gives information to the audience. -The Birdy Song- used for comical effect, is nostalgic for target audience. Mis-en-scene  Pick 3 different scenes and write notes about: Scene 1 - Laboratory Setting - The location of this scene is an a laboratory. This is very relevant to t...

I had earphones in and listened to it on my phone. - Xbox- I played Black Ops 2 zombies on my xbox. This was connected to the TV. Online gaming would not have been possible 20 years ago. - TV- I watched the Liverpool vs Man City on BT. Advantages of current day society: -Cheaper. These days you do not need to go to the shop to buy music such as an album. There are now apps that you can download music on. This only takes a few seconds. -Wider...

X Factor

X factor Sound - Loud. The narrator of the X factor is very loud. This is because they would like to excite the audience.  -This connotes a feeling within the audience of suspense, the audience will get ready for a good episode ahead.  X factor if often left on a cliff hanger and the background music cuts off. The effect of this denotes the fact that viewers will be eager to watch the next  episode.
